Have you been looking for an easy, step-by-step Drupal tutorial that will show you from beginning to end how to install Drupal 6? Do other Drupal 6 installation tutorials seem complicated or hard to follow? While once quite complex, installing Drupal has become easier and easier as Drupal gets updated. Over time some hosts, like Hostgator.com, have begun offering an easy Drupal install for their clients. These easy Drupal installations make starting your Drupal website a snap! For example, if you decide to use Hostgator to set up your Drupal 6 site, they will complete most of the Drupal 6 Installation for you. This quick tutorial will show you how to use your Hostgator account to install Drupal 6 and get your own Drupal website published to the internet in less than one hour! This tutorial is specifically designed for installing Drupal 6 on Hostgator. We also have a tutorial on how to install Drupal 7 on Hostgator.

If you haven't already, you'll need to get yourself set up with both a domain name and a hosting account. Don't worry, we'll show you how. For all the steps below, click on the picture thumbnail to see a full-size version.

Are you ready to get started with your Drupal 6 Installation?

  1. First, you must find yourself a suitable domain name. If you have one with another company besides Hostgator.com, that's fine, but you will need access to that account. If you haven't purchased your domain name yet, if you want a new one, or if you just want to get an idea of what sort of domains are out there, then you can also visit Hostgator.com to buy a domain name, so that your domain name is conveniently in the same account as your hosting/website.

  2. Second, go to Hostgator.com and sign up for a hosting account.

  3. Shortly after you sign up for your hosting account, you should recieve an email with your account information. Hostgator makes hard-to-guess passwords, so the one they provide will be safe as long as it stays secret.

  4. Once you've logged in to your Hostgator account, you should see a similar menu to the one shown here. Look for a link called 'Fantastico De Luxe'(looks like a smiley face), and click it.

  5. You're now in the menu for 'Fantastico', which is what will be doing most of the work. Click 'Drupal' in the left hand column. Next, click 'New Installation' in the text that shows up on the right after clicking 'Drupal'.

  6. On the next screen:
-Pick the domain you want to use for your site. (This is the domain you picked when you first started the hosting account)
-Leave the space next to "Install in directory" blank
-Pick an administrator username, and a secure password
-Enter a email for your website to use to contact you
    -Click "Install Drupal"
-On the next screen, click "Finish Installation"

  7. When you see this screen, you're almost done!  Place your email address in the area at the bottom and click "Send Email" to get your installation details. Next, scroll to the top of the page and click "Control Panel". In the control panel, look for an icon for "File Manager" and click it. A small window will pop up; make sure "Web Root" is selected and click "Go".

  8. In your file manager, scroll down and click on the file named "default.html". Next click on the delete button(red 'X' icon) at the top of the page. When it asks you "Are you sure...?", click the "Delete File(s) button.

  9. Go back to your control panel and click 'php.ini QuickConfig', which should be right next to the 'Fantastico De Luxe' icon. Click 'Enable QuickConfig on the following page. On the next page, find 'register_globals', and set it to 'off'. Click 'Save Changes' at the bottom of the page and you're finished! You now have a website which has been configured for your domain name. There is one final step...

  10. You need to tell your domain name to point at your brand new website! You will need to log into your domain account (wherever your domain name is registered) and point the Nameservers to the ones specified in the email that was sent to you by Hostgator when you first signed up for a Hostgator hosting account. If you purchased your domain name through Hostgator, they will have sent you an email with a link that you use can use to manage your domain name. Simply log into the account and update your namesevers. You can use Hostgator's 24 hour support which includes phone and live chat if you get stuck.

Your website is now officially published to the internet. You may need to wait as much as a day to give the internet time to catch on and start returning your website when you type in your domain name. Feel free to poke around your new Drupal 6 site and see what it can do in the trimmed down, but still powerful stock installation.

Your Drupal 6 website is now published to the internet and ready for you to start adding content, installing Drupal 6 modules and installing Drupal 6 themes!

A quick note: This Drupal tutorial uses Hostgator's file manager, but after this point you'll want to get an FTP client like Filezilla for ease of use. You can try to limp along using Hostgator's file manager forever, but you will only be able to upload files one at a time which can be time-consuming. A free FTP client likeFilezilla is open source(FREE), is VERY easy to use, and will let you upload many files at once.
