This is a good place to start if you're new to administering Drupal! It's easy!

Not sure what you're looking for? Look below for help on where to start!

I want to get started with Drupal.

Before you can get started, you need to determine which version of Drupal you'd like to use. There are three major Drupal versions that are widely used today, Drupal 5, Drupal 6, and Drupal 7. This site will focus on Drupal 6 and Drupal 7, the two latest versions of Drupal since Drupal 5 is no longer actively maintained. Which version of Drupal should you choose? Well, there are more modules available for Drupal 6 because it came out in February 2008 and therefore Drupal 6 may be easier to customize depending on your needs. Drupal 7 came out in January 2011 and therefore is still relatively new to the Drupal scene. While Drupal 7 is a fully functioning CMS with all the latest core Drupal functionality, not all of the modules have been brought over to Drupal 7 yet.

You should choose Drupal 6 if you feel you will need to add a lot of additional core functionality using modules, or if you are completely new to CMS's and may need extra help and support. Visit the Drupal 6 Installation Tutorial.

You should choose Drupal 7 if you want the latest and greatest in website security and technology, if you are satisfied with Drupal's basic functionality (you just need a basic website that can be customized to look the way you want), or if you are familiar with using a CMS and don't need as much extra support. Visit the Drupal 7 Installation Tutorial.

How do I add new functionality to Drupal like a blog or a contact form?

Drupal makes it extremely easy to add new functionality to your website like a blog or a contact form. All you need to do is find a suitable Drupal module and install it to your website. This may sound complicated, but it is actually a really simple process. Once you realize how easy it is to install modules, you will start to understand why Drupal is so powerful. Visit the Installing Drupal Modules Tutorial.

I want to change the look of my Drupal website.

In Drupal, in order to change the look of the website you can easily install different Drupal themes. There are many free Drupal themes as well as paid Drupal themes. If you already have a website theme that's been created for you, or if you plan on getting a custome website theme created, it's easy for a graphic designer to adapt a theme to be used with Drupal. We know that you will find Drupal as addictive as we do!

How to Install Drupal 7: Installation Tutorial

Have you been searching to find an easy tutorial that will show you step-by-step how to install Drupal 7 with Hostgator.com? Drupal 7 was released on January 5, 2011 and contains some exciting new features with the basic stock installation, including Views and CCK (two very powerful modules) Although Drupal 7 still requires a manual installation, it is a piece of cake with Hostgator's control panel and this Drupal 7 installation tutorial! While we personally love Hostgator.com, this Drupal installation tutorial could also be used to guide you through setting up Drupal 7 with another hosting company.

This how-to Drupal 7 install tutorial will show you from beginning to end what you need to do to successfully install Drupal 7 and publish your new website to the internet in less than half an hour.

Updating Drupal

Keeping Drupal up to date is important for functionality, but even more important for security. Updating your Drupal installation will ensure(amongst other things) that you have the 'Drupal core contributors' latest security measures installed.

Installing Drupal Modules

Modules are chunks of code that can be enabled to add specific functionality to your website. There are modules for fighting spam, fixing links, resizing pictures, and user voting on content to name a few.

Installing Drupal Themes

As I write this, there are 800+ free drupal themes available for download at Drupal.org. This site is built on a popular theme known as Marinelli, which you can also get free at that same link.

Drupal 7

Drupal 7 has a new and very easy-to-use system for changing the look of the site. With these steps, the hardest part of changing your Drupal theme is picking which one you want to use!

Domains Names & Drupal Hosting

Every website you see on the internet requires at least two services in order to operate: a 'domain name', and 'hosting'. A Drupal website is like any other website, and in order to have a Drupal website, you will need to get a domain name and Drupal-friendly hosting to get started. A domain name and a hosting account are the only real necessary services you'll need to start a Drupal website, everything else can be found free or open source(free and maintained by Drupal-loving volunteers). There are companies that provide free website hosting, but you'll generally get a much lower quality product whenever you encounter free hosting services and therre are often limits to how much traffic your free hosting website would be able to handle. We recommend upgrading freom free hosting and getting a cheap Drupal hosting product that will be able to cover all your needs if your Drupal website starts getting popular and higher amounts of traffic. There's nothing worse than finding out your website is down because you were using too much bandwidth for your free hosting account.

How to use FTP

FTP - or File Transfer Protocol - is a way for a person to move files over to their website in a quick and efficient manner. Unlike the methods of uploading and downloading that come by default with most hosting sites, FTP will let you upload/download multiple files at a time. This makes normal tasks WAY easier and quicker to complete.
